“Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain (20 March 1938 – 31 December 2022) was one of Bangladesh's most distinguished legal professionals, renowned for his exceptional expertise in criminal law, unwavering commitment to justice, and decades of public service. Throughout his illustrious career, he earned widespread respect as a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, a prominent legal scholar, and an influential public figure. Early Life and Education Born on 20 March 1938 in Bamna, Barishal (then Backergunge District, Bengal), Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain hailed from a respected Bengali Muslim family. He completed his higher secondary education in Narayanganj before pursuing higher studies at Notre Dame College, Dhaka, and later obtained his law degree from the University of Dhaka, laying the foundation for an extraordinary legal career. Career and Public Service Advocate Hossain actively participated in Bangladesh's democratic and linguistic movements from an early age. During the 1952 Language Movement, he was arrested while taking part in protests in Narayanganj. He was again imprisoned for demonstrating against the military regime of Ayub Khan, reflecting his lifelong commitment to democracy and justice. He was enrolled as a lawyer on 31 January 1967 and became an advocate of the High Court Division on 20 October 1967. Over the following decades, he established himself as one of the country's foremost criminal lawyers, representing many of Bangladesh's leading political personalities and handling numerous landmark cases. Following Bangladesh's independence, he served as the Chief Prosecutor under the 1973 Collaborators (Dalal) Act, leading the prosecution of individuals accused of collaborating during the Liberation War. His contributions to the legal profession were recognized through several prestigious leadership positions, including: President of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (four terms) Vice Chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council Vice Chairman of the Supreme Court Bar Council In addition to his legal career, Advocate Hossain was actively involved in national politics. He joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 2008, served as an Advisor to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from 2009 to 2016, and was later appointed Vice Chairman of the BNP Central Executive Committee. Legacy Widely regarded as one of Bangladesh's finest criminal law experts, Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain devoted more than five decades to upholding the rule of law, defending constitutional rights, and strengthening the country's legal institutions. His professional integrity, advocacy, and leadership continue to inspire generations of lawyers and public servants. Passing Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain passed away on 31 December 2022 at Evercare Hospital, Dhaka, while receiving treatment for COVID-19 and pneumonia. He was 84 years old. His remarkable legacy of legal excellence, public service, and dedication to justice remains an enduring source of inspiration for Bangladesh.”
